About Ubumi Prisons Initiative

Ubumi Prisons Initiative (Ubumi) works to improve the health of vulnerable groups in Zambian correctional facilities. This includes children (including circumstantial children and children in conflict with the law), pregnant women, mothers, and seriously ill people, as well as the psychologically vulnerable. Support programs include health, including mental health, sanitation, education, skills-building and reintegration interventions inside and outside of correctional centres.

Brief

Conduct a cross-sectional study of factors associated with the mental, environmental and nutritional health of inmates, children and officers in selected Zambian Correctional Centres.

What We're Doing

We are currently supporting the Ubumi Prisons Initiative in the development and implementation of a national study to understand the key vulnerability factors and health indicators faced by incarcerated people, with a special focus on women, juveniles and circumstantial children. Initial baseline data has been collected, with plans now underway for analysis, dissemination and publication planning.
